We all know that first impressions matter, especially when it comes to attracting potential customers to your gym. So, how can you make sure that your gym is looking its best and making a great first impression? In this post, we’ll give you 3 underrated tips on how to set up your gym for success!
- Keep it clean and tidy. (ESPECIALLY the bathrooms.)
This may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s worth mentioning. A clean and tidy gym will always make a better impression than a cluttered and dirty one. Customers expect to exercise in a space that is safe and free of germs or bacteria. If a gym is not kept clean, customers may feel uncomfortable or even sickened by the conditions, which can lead them to cancel their membership or choose another gym.
Common cleanliness issues in a gym may include dirty floors or equipment, overflowing trash cans, and unsanitary restrooms or locker rooms. In addition to causing discomfort or illness, these issues can also be a reflection of poor management or a lack of concern for customers’ well-being. Conversely, a clean and well-maintained gym can be a major selling point for customers, as it shows that the gym takes its responsibilities seriously and values their satisfaction.
- Create a welcoming atmosphere. (ESPECIALLY the people.)
Gyms can be intimidating places for newcomers, so it’s important to create a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Make sure that there is plenty of natural light and that the gym is well-ventilated. You could also consider adding some plants or artwork to make the space feel more inviting.
It’s important to be specific here. How your gym “feels” should be a direct reflection of WHO your customers are. The more they feel like “this is MY space” the more likely they are to be consistent, bring referrals, and re-invest in the gym through additional purchases like supplements and gear.
ALL staff should be coached to immediately engage new prospects, have a complete understanding of how your programs work, and be able to guide potential new members to whatever their next step may be.
- Provide thoughtful amenities. (Especially ones they won’t expect.)
Water fountains, cubbies/lockers, and equipment wipes are the baseline. Going the extra mile with personal care items like feminine products, spray deodorant, and hair ties, let customers know that you’ve thought about everything they need to be successful. Spare (new) socks, “reader” glasses, and callus lotion can all contribute to the idea that “you’ve thought of everything.”
When you go the extra mile with the small things, it reinforces their belief that you can take care of the big things and establishes a level of care and trust that’ll be really difficult for your competition to match.
Keep in mind, most of these things don’t cost much, you don’t have to break the bank, just the mold. 😉
