Research shows you’ve got 27 seconds to make a GOOD first impression. Look at it this way, the average person knows within 15 minutes of the first date, whether or not they want a second date. Business is exactly the same. Let’s confirm that second date!
But how does this make prospecting and chasing leads, easier?
Look at your first impression as a head start. A good one will keep people interested, a GREAT one will leave people asking for more. A bad one…well…#ghosted.
Here’s how to make the perfect first impression even if it’s digital.
Do Your Research – It’s never been easier to know who you’re talking to before you ever meet them. Take a glance at their social media, their interests, their passions, and their hot topics. Do we need to comment on that swimsuit photo from 2015? Nope. Is conversation easier if you both love dogs? Yep.
Like it or Not, You’re Being Judged – Spaghetti stain from lunch? Slightly out of breath because you were running late? Distracted because you’re multitasking? Zoom background a messy kitchen? They WILL notice. Meeting someone for the first time is a gift. The packaging should be nice. Clear your schedule 20 minutes ahead of time to freshen up and focus. It makes a world of difference.
The Body Language Dance – In the beginning, let them lead. Mirroring movement and posture sends an “I’m like you” message to their subconscious. We gravitate towards people like us. Once deeper into the conversation, watch for them to mirror you. If you’re leading and they’re following, you’ve got strong rapport.
Questions, Compliments, and Connections – Get people talking about themselves, and conversation will never run dry. Ask relevant questions, repeat back what they say to demonstrate that you’re listening, then give a SINCERE and SPECIFIC compliment. They’ll leave feeling like your time together was too short.
Bonus – Lock it all in with a follow-up, “it was great to meet you” text/DM/email. No more than an hour after you leave. They’ll never forget you. 😉
